Who are the Friends of McKinley Park?
We are a group of volunteers with a mission to revitalize historical McKinley Park of Tacoma, WA and we welcome you to join us. You can join us for scheduled work parties or on your own. If you see an area that needs attention please feel free to jump right in and tackle it. Any radical removal must get approval from the park steward at 253-905-8018
What is McKinley Park?
Formerly named Upper Park, renamed after President McKinley died in 1901. This 26.7 acre historical park located at 907 Upper Park Street & 500 East McKinley Way, Tacoma, WA includes paved walkways, scenic forests, Puget Sound and Port of Tacoma views, waterfalls, hiking trails, a large gazing pond, wetlands, jogging trails, acres of offleash pet area, playground and skate park. Once you're in the park it feels as if you've journeyed to Mount Rainier. A true jewel in Tacoma.
Clean-Up Work Parties:
Meet down at the new playground and restrooms off of McKinley Ave. at 9am to noon for each event (500 E McKinley Way, Tacoma, WA 98404). Metro Parks will provide all of the necessary tools and equipment. Volunteers need to dress for the weather and have work gloves and boots. Volunteers will be assigned by ability to work in specific areas removing invasive and non-native plants such as english ivy, blackberry bushes, trail grooming, holly removal, bark spreading, and small debris removal. This group always has fun and would like to welcome you to the park on a clean up day or a guided tour. All ages are welcomed to volunteer in the park with a wide range of activities to choose from. Each one of you is very important to us and we would like you to leave feeling as if you own a piece of the park. We're so proud to have this grande of a park within such an urban setting.
